The other day in class it was mentioned how the popular video game Grand Theft Auto is the main reason behind how kids are acting nowadays. At first I just brushed the comment aside. But the more I thought about it over the weekend, the more it started to bother me. It was mentioned how this game is the cause of all the violence in America because kids watch their parents or older siblings play this game, and then act it out in real life.
This is not the first thing that has been blamed for teen/kid violence. There has been many before such as:
Looney Tunes
Rap/Eminem
Power Rangers
Comic Books
Marilyn Manson
Some of those may seem absurd but it's true.
Now yes I agree GTA is a violent video game but this game is intended for adults, and has never been intended for younger children. And because the stores do such a shitty job at checking id's on kids I think it is up to the parents to be monitoring what their children do, watch, listen to.
What annoys me the most is how this one game seems to get all the blame, while there are many other things in our society right now that should have equal or more blame pointed towards them. Such as:
UFC
War in Iraq
Teen Beatings On YouTube
This list could go on and on.
I have been playing non-violent and violent games all my life and I have never taken my rage or anger out on anyone because I saw it in a game. This game is fantasy. My parents raised me well enough to be able to differentiate between fantasy and reality. So I say point the blame towards the parents of America.
If they want to play these games or watch violent movies then do it when the kids have gone to bed...it's that easy. But lets stop the hatin' on GTA. It's not going to go away...and if it somehow does some other more brutal and gory game will come around to take it's place. Or some movie or artist.
